good morning. top stories we are following on this friday july 5th. the bart strike is over. for now. union and bart officials came to an agreement, of sorts, late last night. we'll explain in a second, but the good news is. the trains will be running again soon. and firework shows around the bay area were a success last night. we'll show you the sights and sounds. there was one show down near l=a, though, that went out of control. we'll show you the scene and tell you what happened. it's been a hot week here in the bay area, but has the heat wave finally passed? we'll have your complete forecast coming up. good morning. i'm james fletcher. the day we have been

anticipating is finally here. the bart strike is now over. union and bart officials emerged from negotiations just before 11 last night. california's secretary of labor, marty morgenstern made the announcement. bart management and unions agreed to extend the existing contract for 30 days. during that time negotiations will continue until there is an agreement for a new contract. this will keep the trains running until at least august 4th. bart service will be completely restored by 3 p-m today. that means the morning commute will still be without bart. bart will be running seven charter busses from five different locations in the east bay. but by the time the evening commute comes, things should be back to normal. and bart released this statement from general manager grace crunican. it reads, "unfortunately the issues that brought us to this point remain unresolved.

despite lots of hard work, bart and its unions have failed to come to an agreement on contract issues. we still have a wide gap of disagreements to bridge over the next 30 days. what we share in common is a commitment to our passengers and the mission of public transit. it is my resolve to bargain in good faith and keep the trains running. i want to welcome back all the bart employees who have been on strike. now lets get the trains moving. union representatives also made statements last night after the announcement. >> we believe we will be able to get a contract on and 30 days. >> i also want to thank the members of fdr you for their courage and commitment to

illegal fireworks could be seen going off in a number of cities around the bay area last night. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news over oakland where spurts of fireworks could be seen throughout the evening. earlier in the week police around the bay warned the public of plans to jail anyone caught using illegal fireworks. they said they were going to use the 'shotspotter' technology to help track the locations. no word on if any arrests were made.

an accidental detonation during a july fourth fireworks show in southern california has injured at least 28 people. the blast happened as thousands gathered for the fireworks show at a park in simi valley. investigators say many of those hurt were hit by flying debris just two minutes into the show. medics rushed the most seriously injured to the hospital. fire crews contacted the ventura county bomb squad to try and determine how to handle the unexploded fireworks. coming up on the kron four morning news. and here's a live look outside. san mateo bridge

despite some extreme heat, the city of boston turned out on the fourth to celebrate. as reporter sean kelly explains it became a celebration of heroism and resilience just three months after the boston marathon bombings.

>>james: and we are back at 415. developing news. egypt's military is moving in on ousted president mohammed morsi's muslim brotherhood. authorities are arresting senior figures of the party, and morsi has been flown from a seaside villa to detention in the capital cairo. the brotherhood says it

will not work with the new leadership of interim president adly mansour, and the party has called for a wave of protests today, calling it the "friday of rage." meanwhile,president obama met with members of his national security team for the second straight day to discuss the military coup in egypt. this was the scene in the white house's situation room. the white house said it has contacted egyptian officials and other regional partners to stress the importance of returning power to a democratically- elected civilian government as soon as possible. the health of former south african president nelson mandela deteriorated so sharply last week, his family was considering whether to take him off life support.

that's according to court document. the document, known as a "certificate of urgency" said the 94-year-old quote, "has taken a turn for the worst and that the mandela family have been advised by the medical practitioners that his life support machine should be switched off." the following day, president jacob zuma announced that mandela's condition had improved from critical, to critical-but- stable. n-s-a leaker edward snowden's exact whereabouts are still unknown and it seems he may be gaining fans in iceland. yesterday some icelandic lawmakers introduced a proposal to grant citizenship to snowden. right now snowden is seeking asylum from more than a dozen countries after revealing key details of u.s. surveillance activities. at this time only 6 of the 63 lawmakers in iceland support the move. more snowden supporters could be found at an independence day parade in

up. for the first time since last october, visitors were allowed back on liberty island yesterday. catherine heenan has a look at the statue of liberty's comeback. after superstorm sandy sandy didn't damage the statue itself. but the storm surge covered almost three-quarters of liberty island, ripping up bricks, destroying docks, and debris everywhere. the monument had just reopened the day before the storm after a year of renovations. park officials worked around the clock to make sure the island reopened just in time for this independence day. nat coming here and seeing

we head into the afternoon, sunny breezy and much cooler than what we study yesterday. as much as a 20 degree drop for some of you and i later on tonight, an increase in the cloud cover and cooler conditions this evening. here's a look at when speeds. concord at 23 mi. per hour wind speeds. pretty windy all along the coast line. a 14 month per hour for half moon bay. the windy conditions will continue into the afternoon. take a look at terrifies. plenty of sunshine but it will be: the east bay. antioch at 82, 85 in fairfield, low seventies and san leandro downtown san francisco today with a high of 68 degrees. and here's the bigger weather story.
